Sewer Rehabilitation Program to revitalise Elizabeth St pipeline

22 Jul 2022

Greater Western Water (GWW) will be renewing the sewer pipe along sections of Elizabeth Street as part of an ongoing sewer rehabilitation program to revitalise the CBD’s ageing sewer system.

The renewal works begin on 24 July and will be carried out over the next few months by GWW’s partner Interflow who will be relining the sewer pipeline on a large section of Elizabeth Street, between Flinders Street and Lonsdale Street.

GWW General Manager, Growth and Infrastructure, Amanda Smith, said the program is designed to upgrade sewers that are nearing the end of their operational life. This will ensure that GWW can deliver on its commitment to provide trusted wastewater services for communities and future generations, as well as protecting the environment.

“The sewer provides a vital function to our communities and these important upgrades will benefit local CBD businesses and residences by ensuring trusted sewer services for years to come,” she said.

“The sewer rehabilitation program also helps protect the health of the environment through reducing the likelihood of sewage spills caused by ageing infrastructure.”

Works are expected to be completed by September this year, with crews onsite from Sunday to Thursday between 8pm and 5am.

Ms Smith said customers will not experience any disruptions to their sewer services during this time and innovative solutions are also being used to help minimise noise disruptions.

“Our crews will be working around maintenance holes located at various points along Elizabeth Street and some machinery noise and soft light may be visible.”

“We're installing specialised acoustic tents designed to insulate sound and reduce noise impact to locals and those passing by the area,” Ms Smith said.

Some lane closures may be required during the works; however, if necessary, traffic management would be onsite to assist vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists to move safely around the area.

Greater Western Water’s sewerage system includes over 5,200 km of pipelines that manage more than 100,000 ML of sewage each year through transporting waste to centralised wastewater plants for treatment.
