Avoiding sewer blockages
Be careful what you flush
When the wrong things are flushed down the toilet or washed down the sink, they can cause blockages. These blockages can harm our pipes, your property and the environment.
The good news is that you can help us prevent them.
Keep our sewerage system and environment healthy. Be careful about what you flush down the toilet or wash down the sink or drain. It’s the best way to play your part.
Only flush the 3Ps
Only flush the 3Ps down your toilet: pee, poo and (toilet) paper.
Anything else (even wet wipes, paper towels and face tissues) can cause a blockage. Put these in the bin.
What about ‘flushable’ wipes?
Even wet wipes labelled as ‘flushable’ don’t break down like toilet paper.
They can cause major blockages, costing a lot of time and money to clear. Throw these out in with your normal rubbish.
What not to flush
Help us stop blockages and don’t flush these down your toilet, sink, or drain:
- cotton buds
- fats, oils or food scraps
- motor oils
- non-biodegradable products
- tampons, pads and their wrappers
- solvents, aerosols or disinfectants.
Sustainability Victoria can help you safely dispose of household chemicals. Look out for a free Detox Your Home event in your area.
Look out for tree roots
Tree roots can also cause sewer blockages. You can do your bit by:
- choosing your trees carefully
- planting them away from sewer pipes.
